Deadliest Catch

I have been watching Deadliest Catch for couple of weeks now on the discovery channel. It has been one of the best TV shows that I have watched in recent times. The program is basically a reality TV show about fishermen fishing for Alaska Crab in the deadly Bearing sea. Its unimaginable how courageous these fisherman are, risking their lives and hunting in icely cold seas and miles away from home. After seeing all of it, I feel really fortunate about my work, but alas I still complain about it sometimes.

(Mis)Adventerous Weekends

I had been really busy the past weekend and this weekend too has been keeping me pretty much occupied. I am hoping that tomorrow's Sunday would give me some space to breath easier.

Going back to last weekend, it was the most torturous weekend that I had since I joined NetApp. As usual I was at Tanu's place but was working my ass off on an office project which had a deadline the following Monday. I was battling hard to prevent my code from crashing but alas things weren't going my way. To add to the trouble Tanu's laptop started refusing to boot. Stupid Windoze!!! had been corrupted, things couldn't have been worse. It was extremely important for Tanu to get the laptop up and running since she had some urgent work to get done as well. So we rushed to a nearby staples to buy the Windoze CD. Can you believe that crap costs $200, I thought are we crazy to spend that kind of money on some junk like that. So I encouraged Tanu to go with Linux. I downloaded Fedora Core 3 isos on my laptop. It took me about 12 hours to download and burn the CDs. I then installed the OS on Tanu's laptop (TOSHIBA M35X-S329) without any problem. However the wireless card was a bit of a pain, but got that working too in a very short time. I must nevertheless agree that installing Linux is still a little bit of Geeky affair, but these days it is way too simple that it use to be during my undergraduate days.

I then drove home the Sunday afternoon and started working on my office work again. This time I had some strong Indian tea and this really recharged me. After this things started falling in place and I could get all of my stuff working once again. Then in the evening I met Bully (Vipul) for dinner at an Italian restuarant near my place. Had some great food, drove back home and dived straight to bed after talking with Tanu.

Flash forward, so Tanu is at my place this weekend and today the power connection her laptop's motherboard got chipped off. Hence we could not power the damn thing up and the laptop was rendered useless for a while. I had to give her my laptop since she had some urgent work to be done. However I decided not to give in so easily, hence I rushed to radioshack and both some computer and electronic repair tools like screwdrivers and a soldering gun. I completely disassmebled her laptop using the instructions found here (God bless the internet). I then soldered the chipped off power jack and reassembled the laptop. It seems to work fine now and does not seem to give her the charging problems that it use to give her before.

I am going to head to sleep now, however I need to marinate some chicken, since I plan to cook some good food for both of us and then enjoy the food with some red wine that I bought this evening in the middle of all the chaos. Chaao...Good Nite..
