Leadership

Saw Carly Fiorina's talk on the Stanford website and it was a really good one. Carly explains the difference between management and leadership in very simple terms. Management basically involves simply producing satisfactory results under the given constraints and conditions. While leadership involves bringing change in the order of things. Leadership also involves three important things namely Capability, Collaboration and Character. Capability to ask questions and hear the answers.

Another important point to learn from her talk was that people who stop learning get jaded while people you keep learning are much more energetic. Also it is important to note that it's not the most powerful or most intelligent who survive but ones who adapt easily to the change in environment. Couldn't have agreed more with this.

Drywall Painting 101

Tanu wanted me to paint the baby room sky blue, I knew this would be a headache but I did comply. I finished painting the room today afternoon and boy it was worth every bit of effort I had put in. The room looks simply amazing with the sky blue color and white doors and white borders.

This is the first time I ever painted a room. I did make few mistakes but I did learn from them. Anyway I wanted to document my painting experience so that I do not forget the steps next time there is another room to paint or if someone needs any help on it.

Things that you need to paint a room

1) Primer (Latex based is preferrably, it is bit costly but environmentally safe, go green!!!)
2) Paint (Latex based)
3) 3" Masking tape
4) Rollers
5) 2" paint brush
6) Rag cloth
7) Gloves
8) Container to hold the paint
9) A ladder
10) A canvas cloth to cover the carpet while painting

The steps to paint the room are follows
* Cover the carpet in the room with the canvas cloth
* Use the masking tape to cover all of the borders in the room to which you won't be applying the paint. Make sure you apply the masking tape at the intersection off the wall and the ceiling as well. This enables easy in painting using a roller.
* Remove the face plates of the electric outlets. Make sure that you tape the screws to the face plates so that you don't lose them.
* Fill in the nail holes in the wall with a filler and smooth the holes using sandpaper.
* Once the nail fillings dry up, clean the walls with an extremely mild solution of soap and water.
* After the walls dry, apply two coats of primer using the roller. Let the primer dry for about a day. You will need to prim the border areas using the 2" brush.
* Now apply two coats of paint using same roller but with a different sponge. You will need to paint the border areas using the 2" brush.
* Once the paint drys off, remove the masking tape
* Apply the face plates of the electric outlets

Viola, the job is done. It's pretty simple but tedious and sometimes exhausting.

2 years and many more to go...

Tanu and me celebrated our second wedding anniversary yesterday. We went to nice mexican restaurant for dinner followed by a movie. We watched Luck by chance and we really liked it. Unfortunately we had to skip the ending of the movie since the theater caught fire and we had to be rushed out. Fortunately no one was hurt.
